Meet Our Team
David Hilliard
Owner
David Hilliard is a native of Charlottesville, Virginia. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. He also earned accreditation from the Erickson School of Aging for Management and Operations of Senior Housing and Care. He began his professional career on Wall Street on the investment side in Institutional Sales/Equities with Donaldson Lufkin Jenrette and was also a Managing Director at Wachovia Bank.
In 2000, he began working in the healthcare industry as an Investor/Adviser for Shelburne Bay Senior Living in Shelburne, Vermont. Mr. Hilliard, in conjunction with a local partner, founded The Lodge at Otter Creek in 2006. The Lodge at Otter Creek is located in Middlebury, Vermont, and is a community similar to The Lodge at Old Trail. In 2007, Mr. Hilliard founded Piedmont Senior Living to develop The Lodge at Old Trail, which opened in May of 2012.
Beth Barber
Executive Director
Beth’s career has focused on working with seniors in various capacities. Before coming to the Lodge at Old Trail, Beth was the first Executive Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Virginia. She has also been a social worker in long-term care, a private geriatric care manager, and the Program Director for Senior Center, Inc., now known as The Center.
Beth has served on many local boards of directors, including JABA, Meals on Wheels, Martha Jefferson House, and Cville Village. She was appointed by the Virginia Senate to the Commonwealth Council on Aging in 2008 and was elected to two terms as Chair.
Through her work on the Council, she was involved in crafting the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Aging Plan and the Governor’s Conference on Aging.
Beth is a Charlottesville native with personal experience in caregiving for her parents. She knows firsthand the challenges, blessings, and decisions that arise. She received her Bachelor of Science in Family and Child Development from Virginia Tech in 1987.
Renee Martin
Administrative Services Director
Renee, a longtime Charlottesville resident, has been happily married for over 40 years and is a proud mother of three, including The Lodge’s Dining Services Director. She is also a grandmother to two young grandchildren. A graduate of Longwood University with a degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Renee has a varied professional background, including working with adults with disabilities, owning a coffee shop, and working in restaurants. Since 2014, she has been an integral part of The Lodge community, which she values for its close-knit staff and residents, making it a special place to live and work.
Ellie Barber
Marketing Director
Born and raised in the city of Charlottesville, Ellie’s experience has been marked by a passion for creating meaningful connections and enhancing the lives of seniors. With a heart dedicated to service, Ellie has spent the past five years immersed in the world of senior living. Passionate about creating a vibrant community, Ellie thrives on connecting people with opportunities to stay active, engaged, and fulfilled in their golden years. With a compassionate approach and a deep understanding of senior living, Ellie is committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. In her free time, you can find Ellie enjoying the scenery at one of the many local wineries or breweries.
Trina Harmon-Murphy
ALFA, LPN, DCP, Health and Wellness Director
Trina is a native Virginian, she was born and raised in Nelson County, VA. She is a graduate of Western Albemarle High School and The Richmond School of Health and Technology. Her nursing career began at UVA, where she worked in outpatient, internal and family medicine. Trina started her journey in long term care in 2007 when she became the Resident Care Director at The Colonnades. She has subsequently held nursing leadership roles in several communities. In 2017 she successfully completed the requirements to be an Licensed Assisted Living Administrator. Trina made the decision to return to nursing leadership in October of 2023, as the Health & Wellness Director at The Lodge. Trina has 3 children and 14 grand-children. When she is not spending time with her family and friends, she enjoys reading, refurbishing furniture, cooking and spending time outside.
Justin Goolsby
Environmental Services Director
Justin is a seasoned Maintenance Director with over 18 years of combined experience in lawn care, building, and residential maintenance. A graduate of a four-year HVAC program, Justin holds a Universal EPA 608 Certification, showcasing his expertise in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. For the past decade, he has been a dedicated team member at The Lodge, ensuring the community operates efficiently and safely for residents and staff. Outside of work, Justin enjoys spending quality time with his spouse and three daughters, often embracing the outdoors through activities like fishing and dirt biking in the mountains.
Pam Jessee
Life Enrichment Director
Pam is a Certified Activity Director with over 11 years of experience at The Lodge, where she’s known for her deep love for both residents and staff. She is a Certified Fitness Leader in the Stay Active & Independent for Life (SAIL) program and serves on the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. Pam is also Co-President of the Central District of Activity Professionals in Virginia and a board member of the Virginia Association of Activity Directors. Outside of work, she’s a church pianist, a music concert enthusiast, and enjoys snow dogs, yellow roses, daisies, Eeyore, and M&M’s as her “Happy Pills.” Pam is the proud mother of three grown sons.
Justin Martin
Dining Services Director
Justin, a Charlottesville native, brings nearly 20 years of professional cooking experience to The Lodge. Trained in classical French fine dining, he combines expertise with a passion for creating exceptional culinary experiences. After initially spending two years at The Lodge, Justin left but quickly realized he missed the family-like atmosphere and sense of community. Returning to The Lodge, he has now been a valued team member for over five years. In his free time, Justin enjoys relaxing with his girlfriend and their three dogs, embracing the simple joys of life outside the kitchen.
